Otoplasty is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to help create a more normal ear appearance in those whose ears stick out too far from the head or are overly large. Children born with protruding ears are oftentimes made fun of by their peers and this can negatively impact their self-esteem well into adulthood. The otoplasty procedure, also known as Ear Surgery, reduces and/or reshapes the cartilage of the ear to create the new ear shape and/or size. Otoplasty may be performed on children age five and up–typically it is better to have the procedure performed earlier rather than later as the cartilage of the ear is more moldable in children, though teens and adults may still benefit from the procedure.
